General Clinical
Fecal Occult Blood Test
About
An immunochemical stool test for hidden blood detecting hemoglobin and transferrin. Used in bowel cancer screening.
Preparation
For 72 hours before stool collection, avoid laxatives, rectal suppositories and oils, and limit (as agreed with your doctor) medications that affect bowel motility (belladonna, pilocarpine, etc.) and stool color (iron, bismuth, barium sulfate). Perform the test before sigmoidoscopy or other diagnostic procedures on the intestine or stomach. Do not collect samples during menstruation, with bleeding hemorrhoids, blood in the urine, or after straining at stool.
